ALERT: How To Avoid Buying A Flood-Damaged Vehicle

Second hand vehicles, popularly called “Tokunbo’ vehicles abound everywhere in Nigeria. The market is so big that hardly would you find a household without having patronized or getting ready to do so. Yet, only a few know how to identify a good one.Truth is that most of the vehicles imported into Nigeria especially from the Europe, and Canada might have been damaged by , Hurricane or typhoon.

Before you fall prey to a -damaged vehicle, you need to “shine your eyes” lest you fall prey and regret your decision.

These are steps you need to take:

1. Select a reputable car dealer. Chose a reputable one who cherishes customer satisfaction above monetary gain.

2. Inspect the vehicle for water stains, mildew, sand or silt under the carpets, floor mats, headliner cloth and behind the dashboard.

3. Inspect the interior upholstery and door panels for FADING or Water marks

4. Check for  on screws in the console or other areas where water normally doesn’t reach.

5. Check for mud or grit in the spare tyre compartment, alternator crevices, behind wiring harnesses, around the small recesses of starter motors, power steering pumps and relays.

6 Check inside the seat belt retractors by pulling the seat belt all the way out and inspect for moisture, mildew or grime.

7. Check door speakers as they will often be damaged due to flooding.

8. Have an experienced mechanic inspect the vehicle before you buy it.

9. Ask about the vehicle’s history. Ask whether it was in any accidents or floods. It is very unlikely they would tell you as it is. You may check online.

10. Look under the bonnet for signs of oxidation. Pull back rubber boots around electrical and mechanical connections for these indicators: Ferrous materials will show signs of , Copper will show a green patina

11. Aluminum and alloy rims will have a white powder and pitting.

12. Trust your instincts: If you don’t like the answers or the deal sounds too good to be true, walk away.
